The Council is proposing to introduce road safety improvements in the Wanstead area covering an area south of the A12 and west of the A406 up to the Borough boundaries with Waltham Forest and Newham (see Wanstead Area Road Safety Zone - Zone Coverage Plan).

We are proposing to introduce a 20 mph zone to cover all roads in the area (there is an existing 20 mph speed limit on the roads around Redbridge Lane West, Overton Drive and Langley Drive and an existing 20 mph zone around Aldersbrook Primary School). The proposals also include the installation of traffic calming measures in the form of speed humps or speed cushions on roads where traffic surveys indicate traffic speeds are high.

We are intending to install 75mm high (3 inch) speed humps on residential roads in the area (Warren Road, Overton Drive, Draycot Road, Belgrave Road, Windsor Road, Richmond Way, Wanstead Park Avenue, Empress Avenue and Arran Drive). On the busier main roads through the area (Blake Hall Road, Centre Road and Lakehouse Road) which accommodate bus routes and segregated cycle lanes, it is proposed that 75mm high (3 inch), 1.6 metre wide two-abreast speed cushions are installed. The scheme also includes the provision of two raised zebra crossings on Aldersbrook Road (requiring the removal of existing traffic islands and speed cushions) and a raised speed table on Park Road near Northumberland Avenue that will include informal crossing facilities.

The Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Services and Transport for London (Buses and Network Management) are being consulted on the proposals.

Why make changes?

The main objective of the proposed scheme is to make this area safer for all road users. The proposed scheme will help reduce vehicular speeds, reduce the occurrence of collisions and improve road safety in the area. There have been 41 collisions resulting in injury including 7 involving serious injury in the latest three years for which data is available (to 30th September 2024). The scheme also includes pedestrian crossing improvements at some locations that will make it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross the road.

Lowering traffic speeds also makes our streets less polluted, and better and safer places to walk and cycle.

    Your feedback is important to us. We want to know your views about the proposed road safety improvements in your area.  

    Please note, we will only accept one completed questionnaire per household. In the event of multiple submissions from the same postal address, only the most recent will be accepted. We are also not able to respond to all comments made, however, they will be considered when making our recommendations. 

    The Council will consider the consultation results and decide on how to proceed with the proposals - we will advise you of the outcome.
