The Council is proposing to introduce a new pedestrian crossing at the existing traffic signals at the Ley Street Perth Road junction, by Seven Kings Primary School. Existing crossings on Ley Street are insufficient for the large numbers of school children, their families and school staff to cross the road together safely. There have been a number of incidents and near misses and the school has requested we take action to improve the crossing facilities at this junction. Since 2018 there have been seven casualty incidents at this junction, with six people suffering from slight injuries and one serious. The introduction of this pedestrian crossing will look to improve the safety record at this junction.

The main objective of the proposed scheme is to create a new pedestrian crossing phase directly to Seven Kings Primary School on Ley Street. This will allow pedestrians to cross at this area where there is currently no crossing provision.

The nearest crossing provisions require pedestrians to cross Ley Street south of the junction of Perth Road then cross Perth Road to get to or from Seven Kings Primary School. The next crossing point is the zebra crossing on Ley Street north of Wards Road which is approximately 170m away from the proposed new pedestrian crossing point.

To create the space needed for the installation of a pedestrian crossing, some changes to the existing road layout are necessary. The Council are providing two options in this consultation to achieve this, and plans for each option are included within this information pack.

Option 1 requires the dropped kerbs between properties 2, 3 and 3A to be removed and footway levels reinstated to accommodate the dropped tactile pedestrian crossing point. This point should not be used for vehicular access to the properties and would remove the ability for those properties to park on their front driveways. Option 2 removes the advanced stop box for cyclists but retains the use of the dropped kerbs to properties 2,3 and 3A.

Delivery of the scheme would be subject to the Transport for London Traffic Signals team approval.
