Earlier this year the council asked residents, businesses and schools what we should do to make it easier to walk around and to shop at Ilford Lane. You can see all the data we collected in the key facts sheet on this page.
What are we proposing?
We are proposing to introduce two signalised pedestrian crossings along Ilford Lane with associated improvements to the public realm; to convert four parking bays to motorcycle bays to facilitate the growing demand for food delivery; and to improve the access to Loxford Park.

Why make the changes?
The new pedestrian crossings will improve safety by reducing speeds and dangerous manoeuvres and provide a safe crossing amenity where people want to cross. Police and Transport for London data show that between 2010-2022 there were 380 incidents and in 33% of cases a pedestrian was injured, and 42 incidents involved a child. There is a reported incident every two weeks on Ilford Lane. The junctions of Cecil Road and Mayville Road are considered as priority incident hotspots for the Council, Police, and Transport for London.
The footway will be widened in the controlled area around the crossings and rain gardens will be introduced in these areas in response to requests for more greening. Over 60% of people in the fact-finding consultation conducted in early 2023 stated they wanted to see more greening on Ilford Lane. The crossings require the loss of some parking spaces, and the proposals show a loss of parking spaces to widen the footway and add greening. The crossing at Cecil Road has two options to choose from with more or less greening.
The public realm around the new crossings will be improved including relocating street furniture, side road crossings upgraded and new signage in a high-quality finish.
What happens next?
The consultation starts on 4 December 2023 is due to last for 6 weeks. The last point you will be able to submit a response online is the 14 January 2024 23:59. The Council will then collate all the responses and decide on making any adjustments to the scheme. The Council aims for construction to begin in 2024, further letters will be sent out to notify you of the outcome of this consultation.
