Redbridge Council is reintroducing and refreshing its Empty Property Strategy. This explains how the Council will tackle the issue of privately owned empty houses within the borough to get them back into use as a home.
As the need for homes increases there is more attention on empty properties. As well as being a missed opportunity, empty properties can spoil an area through their lack of maintenance and become a focus for anti-social behaviour.
The Council is committed to tackling long-term empty properties and to supporting owners to help them return their properties back into use. By bringing empty properties back into use as homes the Council can add to housing and improve the economic and environmental future of the Borough.
The strategy looks at the scale of the issue within London Borough of Redbridge and considers why residential properties become empty and remain empty. The updated strategy takes into account recent policies and reports since the previous version (2012-2015), and the approach is broadly the same in terms of using a mix of incentives and sanctions to return properties to occupation.
