Why is Redbridge Council installing Electric Vehicle Charge Points?

Redbridge Council is installing more electric vehicle charge points (EVCPs) to help residents, visitors, and businesses charge their electric vehicles (EVs) across the borough. As more people switch to electric vehicles, the demand for charging points is increasing. Our goal is to ensure every resident is within a 5-minute walk of a charge point by 2026, and within a 3-minute walk by 2030.

    How is this programme funded?

Funding from UBER and Believ will provide up to 174 fast chargers across 87 locations. The installation, operation and maintenance costs will be covered, meaning there is no expense to the Council.

What types of chargers are being installed?

Up to 22 kWh, with dedicated EV-only parking bays.

How will this affect residential parking?

With the ban on new petrol and diesel cars from 2035, on-street EV charging will become essential. The Council aims to balance the need for EV charging with current parking restrictions, using a mix of dedicated EV bays and shared-use spaces.

    Why were these locations chosen?

Locations were selected based on resident requests, gap analysis from our EV Charging Strategy, and site suitability as determined by our engineering and design teams.

Are UBER-funded chargers only for UBER vehicles?

No, UBER-funded charge points are available for use by all residents, visitors, businesses, and Uber drivers on a first-come, first-served basis.

How can I suggest new EV charge point locations?

Please email your suggestions to evcp@redbridge.gov.uk or plot a point on the map link below.

When will the chargers be installed?

Installation for the final batch of the UBER Project is expected to begin in September 2024.

Will EV charging points lead to increased traffic?

No significant increase in traffic is expected, as more charge points will allow drivers to charge closer to home without traveling to different areas.

How long can EV drivers charge their Electric Vehicles in EV-only bays?

The duration limits are determined on a site-by-site basis.

How does the Council handle objections to EVCP installations?

During the public consultation, nearby residents are notified and statutory notices are posted. The Council considers all objections along with technical factors to make final installation decisions.
