The Council is considering options to improve road safety on Trelawney Road, Saltash Road and Trehearn Road.

What we are proposing?

We are considering two options to improve road safety on these roads as follows:

Option 1 – Traffic Calming – This option involves the provision of traffic calming in the form of speed humps on Trelawney Road, Saltash Road and Trehearn Road as shown on the attached Plan No. 2023/E/099. This option would require the installation of 75mm high (3 inch) sinusoidal speed humps at regular intervals on these roads. Sinusoidal speed humps are similar to round-top speed humps but with a shallower initial rise which is a more beneficial profile for cyclists. This option also includes provision of a 75mm high (3 inch) raised entry treatment on Trelawney Road at the junction with Fencepiece Road. The raised entry treatment is intended to reduce vehicle speeds at the junction as well as improving conditions for pedestrians.

Speed humps would help to reduce the vehicle speeds on these roads, but it is unlikely that they would have a significant impact on traffic volumes in this area.

Option 2 – Traffic Management – This option involves the provision of a “modal filter” on Trelawney Road near the junction with Fencepiece Road as shown on the attached Plan No. 2023/E/100. A modal filter would restrict motor vehicles from accessing Trelawney Road from Fencepiece Road and vice-versa. The restriction would not apply to pedestrians, cyclists, refuse collection vehicles or emergency service vehicles. The restriction would potentially be enforced through the use of cameras. The restriction would also include the provision of traffic islands and an increase to the existing double yellow line “At Any Time” waiting restrictions.

A modal filter would reduce traffic volumes in this area by removing through traffic however would not include physical measure to reduce traffic speeds. It should also be noted that if this option is progressed, residents would not be able to access or leave Trelawney Road via Fencepiece Road and all residential traffic would enter and leave the area on New North Road.

The Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Services and Transport for London are being consulted on the proposals.

Why make changes?

The Council has received a number of representations from residents on Trelawney Road, Saltash Road and Trehearn Road concerned about road safety and traffic volumes in the area.

Traffic surveys undertaken on Trelawney Road, Saltash Road and Trehearn Road have demonstrated that vehicle speeds are often in excess of the speed limit.

The main objective of the proposals is to make this area safer for all road users. It is anticipated that both options will help reduce vehicular speeds (either through physical traffic calming measures or the removal of speeding drivers in the area), reduce the occurrence of collisions and improve road safety in the area.

Lowering traffic speeds and reducing traffic volumes also makes our streets less polluted, and better and safer places to walk and cycle.
