What are we proposing?
As a result of a petition seeking a crossing point at Britannia Road and Albert Road we are proposing to introduce a new pedestrian crossing on Ilford Lane between Britannia Road and Albert Road, and to make Britannia Road one way eastbound. The right turn out of Britannia Road onto Ilford Lane southbound traffic will be banned. There will be no parking bays lost on Ilford Lane as a result of this proposal.
The improvements being proposed are:
Location
Improvement
On Ilford Lane between Britannia Road and Albert Road
A pedestrian crossing with improved side road entry treatments, sustainable drainage / greening, relocated lighting column and high quality finish.
No right turn out of Britannia Road.
Improve sightlines to new crossing.
On Britannia Road (whole length)
One way eastbound only onto Ilford Lane.
The Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Services and Transport for London are being consulted on the proposals as well.
Why make the changes?
The council has consulted on two other pedestrian crossings on Ilford Lane recently and received a petition of over 300 signatures to consider a new crossing at this location. This junction has a high accident rate and there is a clear desire for a crossing point at this location to help residents and customers reach Ilford Lane to shop and eat.
To introduce a pedestrian crossing at this location requires changes to the junction to make the landing areas safe and to give adequate forward visibility for approaching motorists. This requires us to make the Britannia Road one way out onto Ilford Lane and to ban the right turn to keep traffic flowing. The residents from Britannia Road, Riverdene Road, Juniper Road, Fallaize Avenue, Agnes Avenue, Nigel Mews and Kenneth Avenue can therefore still egress this neighbourhood via either Britannia Road or Bengal Road.
To improve sightlines for southbound traffic to the proposed crossing requires a tree to be felled and some foliage to be removed. The proposals include additional trees and planting that compliment the new layout and overall there will be a net gain in biodiversity that retains the screening to the flats and brings more of the verge into the public domain.
We have two options for the new crossing which treat the cycle crossing differently that we would like your views on. Option one is a ‘toucan’ crossing where pedestrians and cyclists wait and cross the road together. Option two is a ‘sparrow’ crossing where pedestrians and cyclists wait and cross the road separately (but at the same time). We will provide some additional low height and low maintenance greening and cycle parking and reposition the bench and other street furniture as part of these works.
Option
Example
Option one – a ‘toucan’ crossing where pedestrians and cyclists wait and cross the road together
Example taken from Waltham Forest on Blackhorse Road.
Option two - ‘sparrow’ crossing where pedestrians and cyclists wait and cross the road separately (but at the same time)
Example taken from Waltham Forest on Blackhorse Road.
What happens next?
The consultation starts on 11 July 2024 is due to last for 5 weeks. The last point you will be able to submit a response online is the 14 August 2024 23:59. The Council will then collate all the responses and decide on making any adjustments to the scheme. The Council aims for construction to begin later in 2024, further letters will be sent out to notify you of the outcome of this consultation.
