Pavement channels are an emerging technology used to facilitate domestic charging for electric vehicle owners who do not have off-street parking. Pavement channels can offer significant advantages for electric vehicle owners, such as allowing access to significantly cheaper charging through domestic electricity tariffs. Additionally, when properly installed, pavement channels can reduce safety risks associated with illegal trailing or unsecured charging cables placed across the footway.

Redbridge Council has received capital funding from the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) to pilot pavement channels within the borough. The Council is now looking for electric vehicle owners, or those considering getting an electric vehicle in the near-future, to submit an expression of interest to participate in the pilot. If the pilot is successful, pavement channels will be offered as a Council service.

A full User Agreement will be accessible once the applications go live in the coming financial year. For general requirements, please refer to the FAQ section on this page. For any questions related to these requirements, please contact the team at EVCP@redbridge.gov.uk

The Council, using funding provided by the UK Government, will cover up to £1,200 of the installation costs per pavement channel (while funding is available). Please note that the Applicant will be required to cover the following additional costs:

  • A non-refundable application fee: £130;
  • A non-refundable design, utility searches, and license fee: £185;
  • A non-refundable one off bond: £500;
  • Any outstanding installation costs above £1,200 covered by the grant; and
  • An ongoing annual licence fee after the first year: £185*.

*Subject to annual changes

If you would like to participate in this pilot, please submit an expression of interest using this form. You will be contacted once applications are open with more information.
