The Council is proposing to introduce road safety improvements in the Wanstead Village area covering the area between and including Hermon Hill, Hollybush Hill, Cambridge Park.

We are proposing to introduce a 20 mph zone to cover all roads in the area which will expand upon any existing 20mph zones. The proposals also include the installation of signage and road markings, as well as traffic calming measures in the form of speed humps or speed cushions on roads where traffic surveys indicate traffic speeds are high.

We are intending to install approximately 80mm (3.5 inch) high speed humps on Hollybush Hill, Spratt Hall Road, Nutter Lane, Rutland Road, Grove Park, and Elmcroft Avenue. We are also intending on installing speed cushions on Chigwell Road, Hermon Hill, New Wanstead.

The Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Services and Transport for London (Buses and Network Management) are being consulted on the proposals.

Why make changes?

The main objective of the proposed scheme is to make this area safer for all road users. The proposed scheme will help reduce vehicular speeds, reduce the occurrence of collisions and improve road safety in the area. There have been numerous collisions resulting in injuries, including 56 slight injuries and 14 involving serious injuries, and 1 fatality, in the latest three years for which data is available (between 7 October 2021 and 18 September 2024).

Recent Transport for London data shows that 20mph schemes contributed significant reductions of injuries compared to the general background trend such as:

  • 40% reduction in the number of people killed.
  • 34% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured.
  • 75% reduction in the number of children killed.
  • 35% reduction in collisions and a 36% reduction in casualties across borough roads.
  • 28% reduction in killed or seriously injured those walking, cycling, or riding motorcycles.

Lowering traffic speeds also makes our streets less polluted, and better and safer places to walk and cycle, without contributing to any increased congestion.

    Please note, we will only accept one completed questionnaire per household. In the event of multiple submissions from the same postal address, only the most recent will be accepted. We are also not able to respond to all comments made, however, they will be considered when making our recommendations. 

    The Council will consider the consultation results and decide on how to proceed with the proposals - we will advise you of the outcome.
