As part of the Love the Lane we delivered Community Mural Art Workshops, where residents and local schools came together to create something meaningful for Ilford Lane. These workshops, led by the talented Caitlin Marie Atherton, were more than just an opportunity to design a mural—they were a chance to raise awareness about sustainability, celebrate creativity, and foster a sense of community pride.

Caitlin led two full days of educational sessions on recycling and sustainability as well as co-designing the mural image at Cleveland and Uphall Primary Schools.

Furthermore, over two sessions at Redbridge Central Library, participants of all ages contributed their ideas, experiences, and enthusiasm, shaping a design that reflects the cultural diversity and environmental consciousness of Ilford Lane. The use of recycled plastic bottle caps in the mural not only adds a unique artistic touch but also carries an important message about sustainability and reusing materials in creative ways.

One of the most inspiring aspects of the workshops was seeing how engaged and passionate the community was. Residents brought forward their ideas, collaborated with one another, and contributed their voices to a public artwork that will stand as a testament to the spirit of Ilford. The workshops were not just about art but about making an impact—both in terms of environmental awareness and strengthening community bonds.

This project is not funded by the council’s budget. Instead, it is supported by UKSPF (UK Shared Prosperity Fund)—a separate funding source that comes from a national pot, not directly from local council tax payments. This ensures that residents' money is spent responsibly while bringing meaningful community projects to life.

As we look forward to seeing the completed mural installed on Ilford Lane, the excitement and engagement from the workshops have already made this initiative a success. A huge thank you to everyone who participated—your contributions have helped shape a piece of public art that will inspire and represent the community for years to come!

If you couldn’t attend the workshops but would like to be involved in future projects, keep an eye out for upcoming community engagement opportunities. Let’s continue to Love the Lane and make a positive impact together!
