The UK government has labelled Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) as a national threat, and Redbridge Council share the government and Mayor of London’s ambition to eradicate VAWG. We know that this ambition is shared by Redbridge residents, who have identified women and girls’ safety on the streets and Domestic Abuse as priorities for the borough. That's why the Council are currently developing a new Tackling VAWG Strategy 2025-2035, which aims to be a coordinated community response to ensure that tackling VAWG is a realistic, if long-term, goal in Redbridge.
What is VAWG?
VAWG is an umbrella term used to cover a wide variety of abuses against women and girls, including:
domestic homicide
domestic abuse
sexual assault
public sexual harassment
honour-based abuse
stalking
Abusive treatment can be hidden and is not limited to physical violence. For example, it includes behaviour that is coercive and controlling.VAWG is a term adopted from the UN 1993 declaration on the elimination of violence against women. It defines violence against women as: "any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life."
