Hainault Road Safety Zone
WHAT ARE WE PROPOSING?
The Council is proposing to introduce road safety improvements in the Hainault area covering all roads in the ward, between Romford Road, New North Road, Fencepiece Road and Lambourne Road.
We are proposing to introduce a 20 mph zone to cover all roads in the area which will expand upon any existing 20mph zones. The proposals also include the installation of signage and road markings, as well as traffic calming measures in the form of speed humps or ramps on roads where traffic surveys indicate traffic speeds are high.
We are intending to install approximately 80mm (3.5 inch) high speed humps on residential roads in the area such as on Brockett Way, Burrow Road, Falconer Road, Harbourer Road, and Arrowsmith Road as well as raised junctions on Brockett Way. Raised ramps are also being proposed on The Lowe and Elmbridge Road which are elongated speed humps. We are also intending to install a raised zebra crossing on Manford Way by Coppice Primary School. The proposals also include changing of speed limit to 30mph on the rest of Forest Road, Romford Road and Hainault Road
The Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Services and Transport for London (Buses and Network Management) are being consulted on the proposals.
The following plans show the proposals in more detail:
Why make changes?
The main objective of the proposed scheme is to make this area safer for all road users. The proposed scheme will help reduce vehicular speeds, reduce the occurrence of collisions and improve road safety in the area. There have been numerous collisions resulting in injuries, including 53 slight injuries and 10 involving serious injuries, and 1 fatality, in the latest three years for which data is available (between 30 June 2022 and 30 June 2025).
Recent Transport for London data shows that 20mph schemes contributed significant reductions of injuries compared to the general background trend such as:
- 40% reduction in the number of people killed.
- 34% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured.
- 75% reduction in the number of children killed.
- 35% reduction in collisions and a 36% reduction in casualties across borough roads.
- 28% reduction in killed or seriously injured those walking, cycling, or riding motorcycles.
Lowering traffic speeds also makes our streets less polluted, and better and safer places to walk and cycle, without contributing to any increased congestion.
