What are we proposing?

We are proposing to upgrade the current advisory cycle lane in Cambridge Park from Wanstead High Street to Lonsdale Road and improve the pedestrian crossings.

The improvements being proposed are:

Location

Improvement

Length of Cambridge Park

Creation of segregated footway level cycle lane

Near the junction with Lonsdale Road

Removal of refuge island and replacing it with a cyclist and pedestrian crossing with traffic signals.

By Lonsdale Road, Highstone Avenue and Spratt Hall Road

Re-locate bus stops to reduce conflict between cyclists and pedestrians

Lonsdale Road, Cambridge Road, Highstone Avenue, Gordon Road, Dangan Road, Addison Road, and Spratt Hall Road.

Installing new or upgrading raised points at the junction

Between Cambridge Road and Highstone Avenue

Upgrading zebra crossing to include provision for cyclists

By Spratt Hall Road

Upgrade zebra crossing to a cyclist and pedestrian crossing with traffic signals.

The Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Services and Transport for London are being consulted on the proposals as well.

Why make the changes?

The Council has received funding from Transport for London to upgrade the cycle lane which will improve safety for cyclists by reducing direct conflict with vehicles and therefore encourage active and healthier forms of travel. The improvements to the crossings will benefit pedestrians as well as cyclists.

The remaining footway width will a minimum of 2.5m in the majority of areas. Where trees or other f street furniture this may be reduced to 1.8m but still provide adequate space for pedestrians. The proposed route will form part of the wider borough strategic cycle network and connect Wanstead High Street and nearby roads to cycle routes south of Cambridge Park in Blake Hall Road, Aldersbrook Road, Lake House Road and Centre Road, as well as in the neighbouring borough of Waltham Forest via Greenman roundabout.

What happens next?

The consultation starts on 6 November 2023 is due to last for 4 weeks. The last point you will be able to submit a response online is the 3 December 2023 23:59. The Council will then collate all the responses and decide on making any adjustments to the scheme. The Council aims for construction to begin in early 2024, further letters will be sent out to notify you of the outcome of this consultation.
