The Council is proposing to introduce road safety improvements in the Ilford South covering all roads to the west of Ilford Lane, Ilford Lane, Loxford Lane and anything south of Loxford lane within the borough boundary. See plan area here.

WHAT ARE WE PROPOSING?

We propose to introduce a 20 mph zone to cover all roads in the Loxford area between Ilford Lane, Roden Street, the River Roding and Victoria Road. The proposals also include the installation of traffic calming measures, in the form of speed humps on roads where traffic surveys indicate traffic speeds are high.

We are intending to install 75mm high (3 inch) speed humps on residential roads in the area (Cecil Road, Hamilton Road, Harvey Road, Hunter Road, Jersey Road, Madras Road, Norman Road, Roman Road, Sandyhill Road and St. Lukes Avenue). Additionally, on roads which do not need speed humps we are proposing 20 mph road markings and raised junction points on Harvey Road, Norman Road and Roman Road.

The Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Services and Transport for London (Buses and Network Management) are being consulted on the proposals.

The following plan show the proposals in more detail:

WHY MAKE CHANGES?

These roads have been identified for these measures as they have a high number of accidents. There have been 87 collisions resulting in injury including 11 involving serious injuries in the latest three years for which data is available (to 30th September 2024).

The main objective of the proposed scheme is to make this area safer for all road users. The proposed scheme will help reduce vehicle speeds, reduce collisions, and improve road safety in the area. Lowering traffic speeds also makes our streets less polluted and safer places to walk and cycle.

We will not be installing speed humps on Ilford Lane because it is a bus route and our data indicates majority of the traffic does not travel above 24 mph.
